What’s in Your Vegetable Garden

by Deborah Ng on May 18th, 2008

Sweet and Juicy Strawberries

I just came in from weeding our vegetable garden. I have to say, it’s looking very promising out there!

Last year we planted a dozen strawberry plants and this year they spread to take over half the area we designated for our veggie garden. We’re going to have so many strawberries they’re going to last way past the spring. I’m sure we’ll have plenty to freeze.

We’re also growing broccoli, tomatoes and corn. I think there’s nothing like fresh tomatoes grown in the garden. This is our first year for corn and broccoli so it should be interesting.

What are you growing this year?

We planted garlic and spinach in the fall. The spinach is taking off, we chop pieces off two to three times a week, and it’s still going strong. We’ve got some tomatoes, and strawberries, and my herb garden is growing well. My daughter brought in a huge amount of lemon thyme the other day to put into our risotto and I was worried, but when I went out I saw there was plenty left. I love going out and getting fresh stuff.

We’re still fighting overnight frost there in northern Ohio, but I have lettuce and spinach planted and my asparagus is coming up. Later, I’ll add several varieties of peppers, beets, eggplant, and zucchini.

I have no luck with tomatoes, which is kind of embarassing for a Midwestern girl. :-)

    Hi Sandy,

For some reason we’ve had no luck with peppers, zucchini and cucumbers. I decided not to try them this year because we have so much going on with our fence project and more. Next year I may get ambitious again. We’re really excited about fresh corn. I’m not a big corn eater but my husband and son love it!

Enjoy your garden. I know from talking with you all these years, you’re very passionate about gardening.

We planted onions, green beans, peas, corn, radishes, carrots, zucchini, pumpkins, tomatoes, bell peppers, and j. peppers. This is my first year at having a garden of my own, and I am very anxious to start canning this fall. Wish me luck.

We’re in the midwest too and just planted blueberries (help! Leaves are falling off =(…), blackberries, asparagus, peppers and cilantro. We’re getting a CSA box so I didn’t want to plant too much…next year we might be ambitious again!

We added corn to the mix this year, but only planted a couple stalks because we just don’t enough room (or tilled ground!). My square foot garden is spilling over, so we moved a few things to ground level - squash, cucumbers, and two tomato plants. We still have some peppers and starter tomato plants in our garden box.
