TJ Morgans: Take Your Passion to the Next Level
I received a care package from my good friend Tommy a couple of weeks ago. Though Tommy lives in Florida, we talk every day thanks to the Internet. He has a love of cooking and shares this love with his friends as often as he can. My care package included 2 jars of Tommy’s awesome split pea soup and 2 jars of the most amazing chicken soup I ever had. My husband isn’t really a soup person and my son doesn’t do split pea or "grown up" chicken noodle, so I’m happily having it all to myself.
Tommy’s care package contained something else. 3 bottles of TJ Morgan’s basting sauce. Let me digress for a second to make a confession. I’m a rib junky. My husband has a smoker on the back deck and slow cooks ribs to perfection. For wetter ribs I use my crockpot. I generally purchase ribs when they’re on sale, but after receiving the basting sauce I splurged. I marinated the ribs overnight in the basting sauce and crockpotted them for the better part of the day. Perfection. The sauce is supposed to be a grilling baste, but I’ve found lots of uses for it. Last night I put it in the hamburger meat.
So why am I talking about basting sauce? Because TJ Morgan is Tommy’s cousin. His hobby led him to brand and manufacture his own sauces. It got me to thinking, how many hobbies led to great ideas? How many successful jewelry makers, fashion designers or cookie bakers took their passions to another level to create a successful business? Next week TJ Morgan is meeting up with a distributor to see about putting his sauces on the market. If that isn’t the American dream, I don’t know what is.
