Thursday Thrifty Tips: Holiday weekend frugality

Ok, so I’m a day late - but hopefully not a dollar short. I actually had this ready for posting yesterday and forgot. Folks, this is what happens when you reach your 40’s.

So we’re about to end the summer with a long, holiday weekend. My family won’t be going away. We’re working on our house instead. We need new windows, a new master bath (ours is gutted), doors, a kitchen floor and a whole laundry list of other items in desperate need of update. Trust me what I tell you fixer uppers are bargains…but they’re also draining.

Perhaps we’ll have a barbecue with some family members, but other than that, it’s really nothing special. What I like about these barbecues is that everyone pitches in. When we all bring a dish, it takes the strain off the hosts. We also use disposable plastic cups that will be washed and reused. Something I’m always noticing about disposable cups is how people tend to leave theirs on a table or other surface, and rather than look for to see where they left them, get a new one. My husband and I provide permanent markers for our guests to write their names on their cups so they don’t lose them.

Mostly we’ll be saving money by borrowing movies from the library for our evenings and entertaining at home. This way we can still make the most of our holiday without emptying our wallets.

How about you? What ways do you save money during these long summer weekends?

I think we’re going to have some family fun and make S’mores on our backyard fire pit. And hopefully I’ll be *making* some money with my yard sale tomorrow — great to do on a long weekend, because I’ll still get two days off afterward!

Good luck with the home projects.

    Deborah,
I enjoyed your posts, but your profile link doesn’t seem to be working.

On long lazy summer weekends I work. Which, I might add is about as thrifty as one can get. Well, until I have to pay for the therapy I’m going to need for the sadness caused by working all weekend. Ok folks take a thrifty non-working weekend. Once in a while we go to the zoo; but we buy a thrifty membership so basically throughout the year each visit ends up costing about 50 cents.
