The Grocery Shopping Munchies
SingleMom&Money wrote last month on the dangers of going grocery shopping when you’re hungry. She believes that it should be against the law because it’s as dangerous as drunk driving. I don’t know if it’s as dangerous as that, but it’s something that can defintely put a dent in your bank account.
SingleMom offers up her Top 10 list of the reasons why shopping while hungry is bad and a couple that stood out for me were…
- You shop with your eyes and stomach instead of your list. (You brought a list, right?)
- You say YES to your childrens’ sugar infested ‘wants’ when you would have otherwise said NO.
- You buy way too much junk and/or processed food because you want to eat as soon as you get home.
In regards to the kid one…my wife and I have only been parents since last fall, but we quickly discovered that grocery shopping is a SOLO task. We’re lucky in that we both work from home and have flexibility in our schedules, which makes that easier for us and I understand how for some folks there’s no way to shop without the little buggers. If you can achieve it though, do it SOLO!
One problem that I have personally - being a former chef who worked in high-end restaurants and resorts, I developed a very expensive taste for certain types of foods. With more and more grocery stores expanding their selections with all kinds of gourmet offerings, I sometimes have a really hard time keeping myself from buying up all the really awesome and expensive foodstuffs that I don’t get to play with for a living any more. I think that may be why my wife insists on doing the SOLO grocery shops these days:o)
Here’s that article from SingleMom & Money.

I agree that grocery shopping works well as a solo outing, but I have fond memories of strolling down store aisles with my baby boy between the ages of say, 8 - 18 months. As long as he wasn’t cranky, and I had a few tricks in the diaper bag, we had great fun. It’s a good time to talk to your baby, show them new things, and have a lil adventure. It’s amazing what you notice at the store when you look at things through your baby’s eyes. (Look up!)

If you do take a child with you (try to keep it to just one) always take a snack with you and most stores offer free cookies. I found this a great time to teach (the one child that actually liked to go to the store) the vaule for looking for the cheapest items (gen. or store brands) and looking on top and bottom shelves and using coupons. It turns out years later that he is a better shopper than me. He really has a gook eye. If I put something in the cart he will go back and check to see if I could have gotten it cheaper. (he’s now 33 y/o) LOL
