Swapping Gift Cards OnlineThe New York Times did an article last weekend on the rash of new web sites popping up that are dedicated to the buying, selling and swapping of gift cards, the modern day version of the gift certificate.

Gift cards are expected to be some of the most popular gifts this holiday season with sales in the US of over $18 billion. Total annual sales are projected at $56 billion with about 8.5% of those cards going unspent.

These sites that are springing up are creating a vibrant secondary market. Buyers can fetch cards at savings of 10% - 30%. For traders, it can be an easy way to exchange a card from one store for one that they prefer to shop at. Sellers can pick up some quick cash.
