Spend Money on Christmas Gifts, Not Bills

by Noel on November 22nd, 2006

Christmas Gift BasketThe yuletide season is here. Be prepared to have our recently-fattened up wallets emptied for the holidays — gift-buying, tree-decorating, eggnog-drinking holidays. With all the things we’d rather spend on, it’s common sense for us to try and save on something, isn’t it?

Cutting down on electricity costs is one of them. Here are a few ways to direct that hard-earned income to savings, or better yet, holiday gifts.

1. Make better use of the microwave, crock-pot, and toaster oven. They are more energy efficient, and they release little or no heat into the air. It is possible to make whole meals out of the microwave, so look into online recipe sites for holiday cooking tips.

2. When holiday cooking forces you to use the oven, think of making the process more efficient by cooking more than one dish at once. That way, if you’ve got a party in waiting, they’ll be pleased that you got out the food in half the time.

3. An oven will remain hot even if it’s already turned off. Save electricity or gas by turning the oven off just as the food is about fully cooked.

4. Check out your holiday schedule and see where you can save. The holidays makes for the perfect reason for people — children, party guests, neighbors, and friends — to come in and out. Manage your resources wisely.

5. Sometimes saving electricity is as simple as going back to the basics. Simply turn off any appliances that aren’t in use. This includes the ceiling fan, the television (it doesn’t count if you’re in front of the tv, if no one is watching then it should be turned off), and the lights.

Follow these simple steps and you’re sure to save a few dollars from your holiday expenses.
