Shopping Around…

by Deborah Ng on March 5th, 2008

As I mentioned yesterday, I’m having a small dinner party for my mother’s birthday this weekend. I have the menu all planned out, from the appetizers to the dessert. Today, I spent about an hour going through the sales flyers checking out loss leaders, manager’s specials and coupon deals. Tomorrow after my son goes on the school bus I’m going to drive to the three area supermarkets and get the items I need where they’re cheapest.

To be honest, we do comparison shop but we don’t got to three different stores every weekend. We just go to the one with the best bargains. Since this weekend promises to be more expensive, I don’t mind shopping around.

Do you shop at different markets on the weekend?

Yes. We don’t drive all over (that being counter productive to saving money) but there are some things we get at Sam’s, some at Aldi, some at Pick n Save. We typically hit at least two of these on a weekend.

I don’t hit three. I don’t live close to stores, and so we usually go to one or two at the most. Usually only one. I am trying to make a list though and stick to it, unless I find a really good deal, like day old sandwich rolls for 40 cents. I found 3 packs of them.

@dh - And by the time you finished 3 packs of day old sandwich rolls, how many days old are they really?

I always look at the “day old” aisles for Mr. N’s sandwich rolls or donuts for the guys or specials. Also, my grocery store has a section of discontinued items - the manufacturer will no longer make them. And they’re usually 50 - 75% off.

I have two teenagers, I still have a couple left, but they’re mostly gone. I put them into ziploc bags and stuck them in the fridge. I thought about putting them in the freezer, but I didn’t need to.
