Saving on Baby Care: Clothes, Bathing, Feeding

This is the second part of the Saving Money on Baby Care post.

Baby Clothes

Keep them to a minimum. Do not be tempted to get everything in every color because they outgrow their clothes quickly. Buy only what is needed and not because their cute. Hand me downs are great since babies grow before the clothing shows signs of wear and tear. Do not be brand conscious.

Just make sure that it is comfortable and made of fabrics that do not cause irritation. Buy basics in white so it can be used by your next baby without worrying if it is gender appropriate. Buy printed fabrics so the stains will not be too obvious. Never buy baby clothes in newborn size. It will be outgrown in a week. Get the larger size every time you buy baby clothes.

When buying footwear, buy a size or two larger than the present. Just make sure that it will not be too loose that it falls off when the baby walks. Socks can be folded so buy the 0-1 year old size rather than the newborn or 0-3 months size.

Bathing

A big basin can be used in lieu of a baby bath tub. Just make sure that you bathe the baby with the least amount of water possible.

Feeding

Make your own baby food meals rather than buying baby food from the store. Babies do not need special foods. They can eat the foods you eat just make sure that you cut them up in small pieces or better yet use a blender. At least you’ll know what exactly is in your baby food.

Baby Shower

Have a baby shower before shopping for baby essentials and baby gear. This will cut cost because you can prepare a checklist of the baby essentials and gear and make a wish list that can be assigned to guests. This way, the guests will exactly know what to get and this minimizes getting more than one of every thing.

The bottom line is being informed before paying for baby needs. Do not buy every baby gadget there is. Evaluate first before making a purchase. Shop around. Babies don’t come cheap but as they say, big things come in small packages. Take extra measures to save on some things to a lot more on things that matters… say education, savings for the baby, etc.

Making purchases for baby can be expensive. But, if you do shop around you can get some great merchandise at great prices. I agree on having a baby shower to help out with the baby clothes and accessories that are needed. Check out http://www.sandboxcouture.com for a great Registry for baby and mom!
