Save Money on Glasses by Reusing Your Old Frames
I need new glasses. It doesn’t seem possible as I got my last pair only about a year and a half ago, but it’s true. I find myself making the text very big on my computer screen and holding books at knee length in order to read. Though we have a great eye plan, it still seems a shame to pay for another pair of glasses so soon, especially since I really like my current frames.
To save money on glasses, and because I’m happy with my current frames, I’m just going to have new lenses installed in my old frames. Frames can cost a couple of hundred dollars, so the savings is considerable.
I heard sales people talking at the glasses place and they mentioned in many cases it’s cheaper to buy transitional lenses instead of getting a separate pair of prescription sun glasses for driving. The problem with that is the transitional glasses don’t turn darker in the car, so this wouldn’t be a savings for me. I only need my distance glasses for car and television.

Great idea. I’ve reused my frames before. It saves a good amount of money. A few years ago, I got laser surgery. Although the initial cost was much higher, it will save a lot in the future.

I should also mention when you do get new frames consider returning the old ones to the store so the frames can go to the needy.

This is great advice! My mom works for the ophthalmologist office in town and she had suggested I do this with my last pair of glasses. It helps sometimes too to ask if the frames you are buying can have new lenses put in later. I guess some frame materials don’t have as much give in them and it makes doing this a little bit more difficult.
