Ring in the New Year with Friends

by Deborah Ng on December 29th, 2007

New Year's Eve

My husband and I have been ringing in the New Year with the same two couples since 1990 or 1991. At first we used to spend a few days at our friend’s hunting cabin in upstate New York. Many of our friends spent a couple of hundred dollars for a nightclub or hotel party, but this was never our scene. Instead we spent the weekend away from the city. We played games, rented videos and enjoyed some good conversation. Imagine spending a quiet, relaxing time with good friends out in the middle of nowhere!

As we grew older, married and had kids it became more difficult to go upstate, but that doesn’t mean we can’t keep up our New Year’s Eve tradition. We all live within 45 minutes of each other so we pack up the kids and arrive at the designated home sometime in the afternoon. We all pitch in with snacks, fingers foods, dinner and beverages. The kids play together and the grownups enjoy each other’s company too.

Every now and then my husband and I wonder if we should stay home or do something else, but it’s a short-lived discussion. We enjoy our New Year’s Eve tradition with friends. It’s a pleasant, positive, casual beginning.

What are your New Year’s Eve traditions.

My extended family would have a massive slumber party. Everyone would bring food and munchies and snacks - and crash on the floor.

When I say massive I mean there were six kids and they had 42 grandkids and they already have 42 more. Everyone is invited and everyone has a great time eating and playing games and just hanging out.

But, I don’t live there anymore so . . . this year we’ve invited another family to come hang out for a casual evening in.

What a great idea and so much fun for the kids.
