Plan Ahead for Illness…or Worse

by Deborah Ng on January 16th, 2008

Chicken soup

If there’s one thing I learned in the past couple of days it’s to plan ahead. You see, on Sunday my husband and I came down with a stomach virus. We thought my son had it too, but that turned out to be a bit of gas, thank goodness. On Monday, both my husband and I were nauseous and very dehydrated. We needed electrolytes and perhaps some ginger ale. I also would have been happy for some chicken broth. Nothing in the house, since I was going to go food shopping on Monday. Neither of went to the store, as we could barely make it off the couch.

It was a good lesson for us. There are always things one needs to have on hand, "Just in case." It’s not just Gatorade and chicken broth, either. I’m talking about bandages, antiseptic and other items that you may one day need. Many times I don’t think of these things until I need them, and then when I want them I either can’t find them or I pay a premium. Stock up on your "plan ahead" items when they’re on sale and keep them somewhere you’ll find them when you need them. Now I know better!

I always keep jello. Unlike gingerale, it doesn’t go bad, and is easily digestible.

You know what? We have jello but neither of us felt like making it. Go figure.

A few years ago I started making sick kits for friends. Usually a box or basket with some soup mix (homemade versions of just add water) tea bags, some hard candies to soothe a sore throat, a crossword puzzle, perhaps a few homeopathic helpers.

They went over great and then I realized I should go ahead and make a few to keep in our cupboards for the inevitable days of flu that will one day come. As someone who is still battleing the death plague, these have been a life saver.
