Party Planning Money Saving Tips (Potluck and DIY)

by Noel on February 28th, 2007

potluckPotluck option
If the party is a gathering of closely-knit relatives or longtime friends who are as good as family, they may be game for potluck or pooling together of food to be able to complete the celebration. Potluck is a good way to be able to have ample variations of food viands at minimal cost. If all guests are up for this, this is very efficient in minimizing food costs and maximizing the bonding between the guests and the organizers. Just make sure that there will relatively be equal shares between the guests of the party so that everyone will be able to enjoy the entire party in the joy of sharing and without any grudges.

DIY for Props
Invitations need not be custom-made. All it takes is a creative hand willing to do something extraordinary out of everyday materials. If you are thinking of purchasing tarpaulin banners, why not consider doing it your own style? It may take time, but it is not only cheaper, it is also more personalized and meaningful to the person you are giving it to. Some cheap material can be transformed into something magnificent if placed together in a right and unique manner.

Compensate on the Essentials
You may not have the loftiest towers for a venue, nor can you have the finest gourmet on the buffet, but if you are organizing with the value of a good set of friends and family with meaningful messages to the person you are celebrating the event for, it is all worth it.

Don’t forget you can always do a theme potluck! That gives everyone a jumping off point for what food and drink to bring-for example you could do Asian, Mexican, Beach Party, BBQ etc.

Another neat idea for a party is to use Evite.com to send out the invites (if everyone is techno-savy). I haven’t used this since I did Yankee Bill’s retirement party from the military 3 years ago, so I’m not sure if it’s still free, but you emailed out the really cool invites, and folks could respond, check off or reply what they where bringing to the party, they could even contribute some money via paypal! and no, this isn’t a paid advertisment or anything, I just though it was a cool way to make sure you didn’t wind up with 3 bowls of potato salad and no soda!
