One Man’s Trash…

by Kadi on July 11th, 2008

…is my new computer desk and exercise bike! Yes, indeed, I scored some sweet deals this week. Let me just start by saying that we are the fortunate recipients of many hand me downs, especially kids’ clothing. I have friends and family members who purposely save their kids’ old clothes for us. In fact, we are blessed that it usually ends up being an over abundance of clothing. So we do what they did and pass it on to others who may be able to use them. I am not too proud to take a hand me down item. In fact, I have really gotten accustomed to them. It is so nice not to spend hundreds of dollars on school clothes, every time a kids has a growth spurt. We have also been blessed to have furniture handed down, since we were first married.

We have received two couches, two coffee tables, a bed, three cribs, two toddler beds, a microwave, a fridge, two dining tables, numerous sets of bedding, lamps, an entertainment center, a desk and numerous toys. We have saved thousands of dollars, just by humbling ourselves enough to accept furniture that somebody else previously owned. This is what my husband calls “Come up.” This week, my mom offered me a really nice computer desk, that her friend didn’t have room for. It is in perfect shape and is a blessing, as I took our small desk and put it in my room. Now I have a mini office to work form!

Today, as we left to take our dog to the groomers, I spotted an exercise bike in my neighbor’s driveway. These neighbors are an older couple, who take very good care of their belongings. The bike had a free sign and looked barely used. I pulled up and asked the husband if he would mind giving the bike to me. He was overjoyed to give me the bike. They had nine kids to raise, so he knows that we are not wealthy. He and his wife are always so kind to us and bring over goodies. God certainly gave us good neighbors on one side! He carried the bike over and brought it in the house for me. He even had the instructions attached to the bike. I am so excited to use my new bike. It is the perfect way to stay fit for free!

I have lived with second hand and hand me down all my life, my mother was a great bargin hunter and even when I was a teenager and not so inclined to wear other peoples stuff, I carried what I learned into my married life and my adult children now bargin hunt too — we never call it being humble, we brag about our great deals! I just recently nabbed 300 clay bricks for free and am builting a small ‘feature” patio/walkway in my backyard…
