Not All Plastic is the Same

by Deborah Ng on March 12th, 2008

At Simply Thrifty we’re all about the reusable. We encourage the use of plastic containers rather than filling up our dumps with disposable items. Not all plastic is the same, however. My sister Diana sent me a great link, one which I’d like to share with you. It’s from National Geographic’s Green Guide, and gives a wonderful listing of the different plastics - which are healthy and which you should steer clear of.

My husband and I stopped microwaving our food in plastic containers several years ago as we read it can cause cancer. It would be so nice if we could live in a world where we didn’t have to worry what we put in our body or what kind of air we breathed. since we do have to be careful it’s nice to know there are resources to help us. Thanks for sharing this one, Diana.

I’ve been hearing more about health issues with microwaving and freezing plastic lately. It’s definitely time to make some changes in my kitchen.

From an environmental point of view, I’m also excited to hear about compostable plastics that are made from vegetable starch instead of petroleum.

The Green Guide is a good reference. It’s hard to keep up with all this information.
