Mom’s Side Porch
I’m blogging from my Mom’s. This is the weekend when my sisters and brothers and I converge upon Mom’s house for a few days to celebrate Christmas. It’s a lively gathering and the house is filled with kids of all ages. We celebrate with good food and libation and laughter-filled conversation and games.
My mother used to have two refrigerators and an extra freezer in the basement. With six kids, their spouses and eleven grandkids, you can imagine the amount of food being consumed. The problem is, we’re not all here throughout the year and it can cost a lot of money to run all of these heavy appliances. Mom decided it was time to get rid of the extra freezer and fridge.
We’re making up for the lack of space however, by taking over Mom’s side porch. There are coolers with food, and bags of soda, wine and beer keeping cool outside. It reminds me of when we lived in a small apartment in Queens and used to put our beverages on the back porch to keep them cold in the winter.
It doesn’t make sense for my mother to plug things in just for a day or two. Besides, there’s more room on the side porch than there is in a fridge or freezer anyway. The truly perishable stuff are kept in the fridge, but for drinks, bread and other items outside works just fine.
So tell me…what are some of the ways you compromise when family comes to visit?
