How to Shop at Walgreens and Deals for Week of 8/17/08

by Katelyn Thomas on August 18th, 2008

walgreens deals

So, this is what I bought at Walgreens this week. What would you spend on this amount of food, school supplies, milk, a Knex toy and health and beauty aids? I hope you didn’t say $50 or more, but if you did, follow along to see how you can spend a lot less.

I started by matching up the week’s Walgreen ad with my coupons. There were several in ad coupons for toothpicks, lighters (to light the grill) and Jiffy muffin mixes, but I also had coupons for Bertolli dinners, Pert Plus shampoo and Ragu sauce. I also had $10 in Register Rewards from the other week’s Kellogg’s deal and$11 on my gift card from last month’s rebates.

Once I was in the store,  I matched up all my coupons to the sale items and added some extra school supplies to bring my school supply total to $5. I checked the clearance section and saw a Knex toy was really reduced, so I added it to the cart.

Time to check out. After coupons, Register Rewards and the gift card, my balance was $22.27. Much less than $50, right? But I’m not done saving money on this week’s deals yet. The reason I bought 2 bottles of Pert and $5 worth of school supplies was to take advantage of a rebate where you buy $5 worth of Pert and get $5 worth of school supplies free. Also, there’s a Walgreen’s rebate this week on Pert, which gives me another $3.79 back. On top of that, Bertolli and Ragu gave me a total of $9 in Register Rewards to use on my next purchase and Listerene gave me $2. I’ll have Register Rewards and money on my gift card for future Walgreen’s deals and will get a $5 check in the mail.

If you have any questions about shopping at Walgreen’s, please feel free to ask. I’d be happy to share more tips with you or tell you how to shop for a specific deal. Oh, and if you know about an awesome deal I missed out on this week, please share that, too!

    Hi Katelyn!
I don’t think we have register rewards at the Walgreen’s here in NE Ohio. Is that a regional thing or am I missing something?

    Hi Sandy,
As far as I know, all Walgreen’s have them. They print out from a gadget beside the register and your store clerk should give them to you with your receipt. In your sale paper, does the front page have an advertisement for Tide 2x Laundry Detergent? Below it, there should be a box about the sale price, register rewards and like paying $8.99. If you have that sale in your ad, your store should be offering register rewards.

Oh, okay. I must just never buy the right stuff. I’ve never noticed that on the circular or gotten them at the register. Thanks. Something new to look for.

    Hi Katelyn,
I live in Livermore falls in Maine and we dot have any Walgreens even nearby. We will by Deber I believe. Any tricks of the trade with a beginner would help but it seems like with Walgreens people really make out on the deals. Thanks and happy saving.

    Christine,
It looks like you have a Rite Aid there, though. This week, with coupons from the P&G insert in yesterday’s paper, you can get a tube of crest toothpaste and a Pantene shampoo free after rebate. There are a few other things, like Electrasol dish washing detergent, that are fairly cheap after the rebates.
