Have You Ever Been Too Thrifty?
The other day, I was at the library and the children’s librarian asked me to sort out the crayon bins and throw away any broken bits. I immediately pointed out all the uses for broken crayon bits. She knows I’m thrifty, but someone who doesn’t would have thought I was a bit nuts.
To be fair, the things you can do with broken crayons are pretty cool. One of my favorites is to put the bits into a muffin tin and cook them in the oven to make crayon cupcakes, which are super easy for young children to use. However, collecting crayon bits and taking them home from work was going a bit far.

I can’t tell you how many times I have been way to thrifty, my neighbours think I am a nut…
My favourite is egg shells though. Where I live the soil needs to be “ammended” on a yearly basis as the heavy rain makes the soil acidic, so if you add lime or calcium (EGG SHELLS) your garden will grow much better. I save my egg shells and crush them then spread the shells all over my backyard in early spring. Now Lime for the lawn doesn’t cost much, but gee, a winter’s worth of crushed eggshells is FREE… Oh yeah, and I save cardboard cereal boxes and soak them in water, then lay them along between plant rows in the garden — weeds don’t come up for pretty much all summer! My mother taught me that one.

I never thought about cereal boxes, but I use big packing boxes as a foundation under the weed barrier fabric, which doesn’t seem to work well on its own.
