Happy Talk Like a Pirate Day …oh yeah and happy anniversary too
Today is Talk Like a Pirate Day. For some this may be an occasion to celebrate and grunt “argh” often throughout the day, but in my house just about every day is Talk Like a Pirate Day. My five year old likes to grab one of my scarves to use as a sash and put on an eyepatch he won at a miniature golf course and call my husband and I “me hearties.” We have this box of cheap plastic gold coins he got from somewhere or another and I hide them in the back yard so he can explore for treasure. I like this game for days when there’s no homework or playdates because it’s good for about 30 to 60 minutes worth of playing. Best of all, all of the items are found around our house. I did have to draw the line at his trying to bury my jewelry box though.
My son has a great imagination but needs to be challenged. Thankfully, all it takes is a look through Mommy’s drawers and a poke through the toy box.
Today is another notable day, my 8th wedding anniversary. Many couples go all out for anniversaries, we don’t. To be honest, I wouldn’t mind putting thriftiness aside for an evening and enjoying a night out, but my husband hates going out -especially on week nights - and he hates spending money.
Instead I find other ways to celebrate. I make a nice dinner and find an interesting bottle of wine. I’ll also make a special dessert which we’ll share after our son is in bed. If it’s a nice evening, we’ll light a fire on the deck chiminea and enjoy each other’s company.
Friends and family tend to “feel sorry for me” because we don’t do much for our wedding anniversary but they shouldn’t. We’re happy and I know I’m loved. Even if my husband is too cheap thrifty to take me out.

Hey a celebration is what you make it right? And just because it’s not diamonds and dinner ..well we are too commercialized as a society anyhow. It’s weird how pressured we feel by others.
I say lets make our own traditions and feel sorry for those who go out and waste money trying to feel good! What’s true and real anyhow?
Happy talk like a pirate day too :) I’ve got some free knitting pirate-y type pattern links on my blog

I was looking for a post I posted last spring on either my other cooking blog or one of the other 2000 blogs I write..anyway…I did a chocolate themed night for MArc, we had chocolate fondue, watched the movie chocolat! and drank a superb dessert wine that had a slight orange taste and was less than 10 a bottle. Grrr..I will keep looking, and HAPPY anniversary

My son is a pirate talker too. It’s so weird. But he says, “Me matey” (sp). He’s an odd kid. Have a wonderful evening. Hopefully you sleep in for once.
