Grocery Savings: Shop the Perimeter
by Deborah Ng on March 21st, 2007

Did you know you can save money by shopping the perimeter of your supermarket first? It’s true! All your important staples are lining the perimeter; you’ll find meat, dairy, fruit and veggies on the walls surrounding the stores. Most people don’t overspend in these areas. Most people also like to shop until their carts are full, even if they’re buying items they don’t really need.
If you shop the outer edges of your store first, you’ll do fine. It’s when you find yourself wandering aimlessly up and down the aisles and impulsively pulling cans and boxes from the shelves that you’ll have problems. To avoid this, shop the perimeter and buy your necessities first. By this time your cart will be almost full and you can top it off with the rest of the items on your list. Don’t stray from your shopping list though, or you’ll overspend!

That’s a great idea that I didn’t think of. Running in for milk always leads to bringing home two bags of groceries.
I also like to make the shopping list based on what’s on sale. If you sit down with the supermarket flyer and plan your menu and shopping list before going to the store you can keep costs down.

This used to be the case in our area but not any more. One wall has pop, another things like chips, then tere is a long wall with the meat, dairy pharmacy and bakery, then the 3rd wall is still part of the bakery and the deli, and the other side of the front is a samll seating area for the deli then the video dept and customer service. It used to be easier but now you have to wander all over the store.
