Frugality and Education: Cutting Expenses on Accommodations

This is the second part of Frugality and Education post. The first part is on saving money on books.
How to Save Money on Accommodations and Reducing Cost-of-Living Expenses
One wise way to save money while studying is to stay at your parents home if you can.
But if you can’t and you don’t need much space, consider renting only a room, studio apartment, or better yet splitting the rent with your roommates.
If you have any special skills that you believe will be of use to your landlord then offer them immediately and you might just yet enjoy lower rent.
Find a place that’s as close as possible to where you’re studying. The proximity of your residence will allow you to use a bicycle or even walk to and fro your college instead of having to feed gas to your car’s insatiable engine.
Find a place that has lots of windows because this will allow you to save on electricity. Windows allow sunlight to enter your room and negating the need to use the lights if you’ve something to read during the day. At night, windows let the cool night breeze in and allow you not to use the AC unit for the time being.
Learn how to cook. Eating out is an expensive habit to maintain. Using the microwave oven frequently, on the other hand, is a dangerous habit and an expensive one as well because it consumes too much electricity. And if you’re determined to be at use in the kitchen for cost-cutting, consider learning how to purchase fresh ingredients from the market as well instead of having to pay more for the same stuff at the grocery store.
Other Money-Saving Tips for Students
If you’re looking for a job, consider applying for any of the open positions in your college because this usually allows you to enjoy lower or discounted tuition fees among other advantages.
If you need a credit card, make sure that you obtain one which is specially designed for students. Good grades and excellent interscholastic records will allow you to obtain lower rates so make sure to furnish them a copy of your records if you have something to be proud of.
Pay your bills on time to avoid having to pay interest charges. Always check, however, if all the items in the bill are correct to prevent yourself from becoming a victim of erroneous input of details or worse, identity theft.
