Frugal Valentine’s Ideas

by Kevin Humphrey on February 7th, 2006

Frugal ValentineThere’s only a week left until Valentine’s Day! Personally, I’ve always felt that Valentine’s is a ‘Hallmark‘ holiday - something made up to sell more greeting cards and chocolate. Now, that doesn’t mean that I think it should be ignored. I believe it’s still a day to be celebrated, but it could be celebrated with little or no money spent. Love is free don’t forget.

Dawn from Frugal for Life did a post a couple of weeks ago with a bunch of cool ideas for some amorous giving. Here are a few of my favorites…

  • Have a picnic on the living room floor without any kids around (unless you live in a nice warm place, in which case, you can have a picnic outside!)
  • Leave little Love notes all over the house in unexpected places. A pad of stickie notes is way cheaper than a dozen roses and your thoughts of love will last much longer.
  • Give Love coupons! Make your own booklet of coupons that your partner can redeem for things like free massages and other ‘favors’.
  • You could give a handmade card, and to really go the extra mile, include a ‘100 Reasons I Love You’ list with it.

Does anyone have any cool frugal love ideas that they’d like to share?

Check out Dawn’s Frugal Valentine’s post here for more ideas as well.

If you want some cute small stuff, the Dollar Stores are full of nice things for valentines day right now. You can get some chocolates and a bear and a card for $3.

To me valentines day is about the thought, not the cost. DH and I agreed when we first got married only to give “gifts” on birthdays and Christmas. If you think about it, once you have kids you have birthdays, anniversary, christmas, mothers/fathers day, valentines day all to think up something “special” for. It’s too much!

I seriously can’t remember the last time my wife and I exchanged gifts for Valentine’s. Like you, Jenn, we think it’s the thought that counts.

I bought a recycled glass heart for my sweetheart, and some hot sauce from Walmart. They cancel out, right?

Well, Dale, if you were to make your sweetheart a nice romantic dinner that required some hot sauce as an ingredient, then you might find yourself ahead on the deal. Otherwise, yeah, they’ll cancel out. ;)

Bought a card, and 2 bags of different kinds of hershey kisses. Typed out 100 different reasons that I love my husband, printed them out, cut each reason as a strip and pasted them to the outside wrappers of the kisses. (2 bags gives you exactly 100 kisses, at least mine did) I put all the kisses in a sealable jar that I have with a label on the jar marked RX: prescription for __________(name) 100 reasons I love you, take one as a reminder whenever needed.
