Simply Thrifty

Frugal Christmas Decorating

by Kevin Humphrey on December 13th, 2005

Christmas DecorationsWell, the festive season is upon us. My wife and I have never been the type of folks to do much for Christmas. We’ve tended to keep things simple with little or no decorations, minimal gifting and focussed more on just spending the time with our families.

Well, earlier this year we became foster parents, so now we’ve got a young ‘un under foot and we’re feeling we’d be remiss if we didn’t get a little more into the spirit of the season than usual. We’re about to start our decorating in the next couple of days so I thought I’d take a few moments tonight to gather together some ideas on how to go about this with a frugal mindset.

One major benefit that we have is that we live in the country. It’s just a matter of heading out the back door into the woods behind our home to gather some materials to our heart’s content. Spruce and cedar boughs, pine cones, bunches of red berries, etc. The wife has already made one trip and there’s a collection of stuff that’s been drying out on the work bench in my shop for a few days now.

In wandering around the web this evening in search of some more ideas, I’ve come across a couple of good resources…

Nicole of be frugal with nicole has put together a couple of articles over the last few weeks detailing lots of cools ideas for decorations. 10 Simple Things - Using What You Have and Frugal Christmas Decorating should help spark the creative juices for you.

Then the current issue of ReadyMade magazine has got some neat project ideas in their Re-Make feature that include making your own snow globes from recycled glass jars, plastic landscapes, water and glitter and how to make a Christmas tree skirt out of an old vintage skirt. Check it out on their web site here.

A nod to Dawn at Frugal for Life for pointing out Nicole’s article.
