Ever Consider Cutting Back A Little?
There’s this 65-year-old fellow in Easton, Massachusetts who was recently downsized for the second time. He’s employing a job search technique that he used the first time this happened, and that is to stand on a busy street corner with a homemade sign that says he needs a job.
Now I really respect folks who have the gumption to get up off their butts and try different things. I can easily imagine how embarassing it would be to go stand on a street corner and essentially beg; but in this fellow’s case, it kind of falls down when you get to the last paragraph in the article. From the DenverChannel.com…
Wilcox said a $75,000 a year job would handle his living expenses, but if he has to, he’ll work for less than that.
As Dale so eloquently asks in his blog, “Are you high?”
I don’t like to kick a guy while he’s down, but give me a break. I realize that we don’t know any details about this fellow’s life and why he needs to make that much money to meet his expenses; but perhaps if he were to lower his expectations a bit or maybe look at a simpler lifestyle, he wouldn’t find himself so unemployed.
Which would you find more embarassing? Holding out for a better job but having to stand on a street corner to do it or just simply taking whatever work was available to you? Or neither?

You know, I think I could scrape by on $75K a year too. It’s all about perspective, isn’t it?

I’m not sure who’d hire a guy standing on a street corner in this day and age. Doesn’t seem safe!
Me, I can’t work because of chronic back pain. Believe me, I tried to think of something I could do, but it all involves standing or sitting for too many hours. So instead, I’ve learned to cut back, use coupons, and just plain be careful. It has really helped. No way in Hades would I stand on a street corner with a sign!
$75,000 a year…my heart bleeds for him.

I’d take any job I could if I was in that situation. The pyramid of needs comes first: shelter, food, water, then measely 75k a year salary. Priorities people. Heh.
