Decorate with the Homemade
My walls depress me. They’re completely bare. We’ve been renovating since we moved here five years ago and have no room in the budget for
the extras. This week I decided I’m no longer putting up with bare, cheerless, unadorned walls. Even fleabag motels have cheap artwork on the wall. I looked around my house and took inventory. Here’s what I found:
- Lots of my son’s artwork - There’s some really great stuff here. It’s colorful, imaginative and suitable for framing. In fact, I think children’s artwork is great for the family room. Besides, no one in the world is as talented as my five year old.
- Old calendars - I have several old Ansel Adams calendars. They date back to the late 80’s/early 90’s but the black and white landscapes are stunning. The pages are heavy card stock and I remember saving them each year specifically so I can frame them and use them for wall art.
- Crafts - While Poking around the basement I found tons of cross stitch supplies. I packed them up when we moved here soon after our son was born, and haven’t gone back. Why not? I can think of a few places cross stitch samplers would look nice.
My biggest expense, I think, will be the frames. They can add up, for sure. I have a bunch in the basement holding old photographs I’ll never display, so I’ll start with them. People are always giving away frames (and artwork) on Freecycle, so I’ll check them out as well. In the mean time, I’ll get busy. I’m not going to let a silly thing like money keep me from putting artwork on my wall.
