Cheap Picnic Tips: Save on Ice

by Deborah Ng on April 23rd, 2007

Picnic
Now that the weather is nice, my son and I will be having lots of picnics in the park. Keeping food and drinks cold can be a challenge, however. Especially on days like today when the temperature is in the mid-80’s. Here are a few of my favorite frugal tips for keeping the food and drinks on ice, but still saving money

Instead of going to the store to buy heavy bags of ice, try this: freeze bottles of juice, water or soda. Use these icy cold beverages to keep your food cool. By the time you’re ready to eat, your beverages will probably have melted enough so that they’re drinkable, even though they are still cold enough to keep the food at a safe temperature.

If you’ll be filling jugs or large containers with your beverages, try filling ice cube trays with those same beverages and using them to keep your drinks cool. This will eliminate watered down lemonade or juice. You can also make your own ice, either by using ice cube trays and filling zip lock bags with the cubes, or by filling old soda bottles with water and freezing. Either way you’re saving money by not purchasing the bagged variety.

See? No expensive bags of ice and no watered down lemonade. It’s cheap, it’s cool and it’s refreshing.
