Cheap Dates

Cheap Date Are you a cheap date? Would you like to be? There are plenty of ways for couples to enjoy a night out on the town, while spending little or no money. Here are a few:

Concerts in the Park – What better way to cap off a summer evening than a picnic dinner followed by a concert in the park? Most area newspapers list the week’s events; the key is to not only check your local newspaper, but those of the surrounding area.

A Walk in the Woods – This is a wonderful, romantic date for nature lovers. Imagine strolling hand in hand on a wooded trail, while observing the wildlife and the sights and sounds of the scenic environment around you.

Dinner and dancing – I’m not talking about a fancy restaurant though. A romantic dinner for two can be created at home. Dim the lights and put on some soft music. Enjoy a nice glass of wine and a home-made dessert. Afterwards, slow dance in the living room.

Rent a movie – It doesn’t cost much to rent a movie, and it’s even less to borrow one from the library. Why not have a movie night? One person can bring the snacks and another can bring the flicks.

Share a sundae – If the price of two desserts puts a strain on your wallet, order one and request two spoons.

Go for a cup of coffee – Sit down and get to know each other while enjoying a cappuccino. Discuss current events or world history. Even if you have to pay for a refill, it still won’t cost much.

Tour historical destinations – Most cities have historical sites of interest and many of them are free or request a small donation. Check out your local historical sites and then venture outside the city. The Internet lists many sites and locations.

Go to a poetry reading – Many bookstores or neighborhood bars offer poetry readings. Sit down, relax, enjoy a drink or cup of coffee and listen to some of your local poets or essayists.

Have a picnic – Cook up some homemade goodies and pack them into a basket. Have a picnic in the park, the beach or even your own backyard.

Visit a street fair – You don’t have to buy anything and, in most cases, the people are the entertainment. Street fairs offer food, entertainment and exhibits, and admission is free.

Read to each other – Pick out your favorite books and read to each other. Designate one night each week as book night and read several chapters of a book together. Each week you can look forward to more chapters. If the chapter ends with a cliff hanger, stop there to give you something to look forward to for the next week.
