Bookant.com Offers an Alternative to Cash-Strapped Students
Saving money while pursuing a higher education is almost like an irony. With the rising costs of education, students are barely able to produce enough funds to stay above their daily expenses. In fact, almost half of students in the US try to save money by not buying textbooks for some of their classes.
Enter Bookant.com, a brainchild of Shan Pesaru, a Georgia Tech student. The site aims to help students cut the costs of textbooks by allowing them access to second-hand books through the site. Bookant allows students to post ads and buy books from other students. Pesaru says that books from the site are priced lower than those offered outside.
Only students and teachers can join Bookant. Registering online is easy and there are no fees charged. However, you’ll have to use your school’s email if you want to get a password, which you’ll need if you want to sell or buy anything on the site. That means your email address should at least have a .edu ending to join. The service also extends to part-time students.
More than just an online textbook classified ads site, Bookant allows students to communicate with fellow students during a sale or auction. If a student finds a book that he needs, he has to bid for it. Offers can be accepted at any time by the seller.
Once a bid is completed, the seller is charged $1 for every book he sells. If the book is more than $100, 1% of the price goes to Bookant. Actual receipt and payment of the book is arranged through the site.
As an added feature, Bookant also allows free services such as alerts through emails and access through mobile phones. In terms of convenience and as a way for students to save money, Bookant offers an alternative way to skipping textbooks just to scrimp on cash.
